Appearance: Below orange-brown with pale veining and bold white ray along trailing edge of hindwing. Above mostly brown: male with orange patch on forewing; female with two white spots centered on forewing.

Size: Small, 1 1/8 to 1 1/4 inches

Habitat: Bogs, marshes, and sedgy meadows

Season: Mid-June to mid-July

Larval Foodplant: Sedges: Such as Nebraska Sedge

Did You Know...
In the west it is maybe the rarest and most local of any butterfly with an extensive range in the U.S. (Glassberg, 2003)
