Guidelines for Submission
General Information:
All of the photographs on this website were contributed by volunteers and supporters. The website does not own the photographs. We welcome submissions of additional photographs for possible inclusion on the website. Any photos used will be credited to the photographer who will retain copyright. We hope to eventually have images of as many species as possible. If you would like to help build this resource of information, please read and follow the guidelines below:
Image Range:
We will accept images of any butterfly only if the image was taken within the designated northern Colorado Front Range region. (see Map)
Image Type:
Only images of living butterflies in wild habitats will be accepted. No pinned specimens please. We also welcome high quality photos of eggs, larvae of any instar, and crysalids, as well as images of both male and female, dorsal (upperside) and ventral (underside) view, and mating pairs.
Image Information:
Please include on the Submission Form the exact date and location where the butterfly was found or the photo was taken. It is important to be as specific as possible by listing the park, road, city or town and county. Please make use of the Sighting Comments/Notes space on the form to provide detailed information. When you name your images for submission, include the butterfly family name (e.g.swallowtail), species (e.g. Anise, if known), a brief description of the location (e.g. park, county), and your name in the title.
For example: family-species-location-county-yourname.jpg.
All images will be checked to verify identification before posting to the website.
Image Format:
Please do NOT send photo slides, negatives, or prints. If you wish to have the above formats scanned to digital format, do so at as high a resolution as possible.
Digital Images:
We prefer uncropped, unprocessed, full resolution copies of your digital images in JPEG format. We will crop and process each image to match the format of the website. If you have already cropped your images and resized them, please send them anyway. We may still be able to use them. Each image will be added to the website at approximately 400 x 300 pixels and 72 dpi. You may also add your name/copyright information directly on the photo if you wish (optional), but remember that your photo will be cropped so place this carefully. If you do not wish to copyright your images, each image you submit will have your name and copyright embedded into the JPEG, so the copyright stays with the image if it is downloaded. When you submit photos, your name and any contact information you wish to include will be added to the photo credit page. In this way, if anyone would like a copy of your image they may get in touch with you directly.
Sending Images:
If you have only a few images, you may attach them to the Submission Form one at a time or in small groups along with your sighting reports. Please make sure the total attachment size of images does not exceed 10 megabytes You can also send multiple emails with attachments. Contact Cathy Cook for mailing instructions only if your images are very large or if you have many images and don’t want to email them. If you have questions about photo submissions, please contact us.
